My journey began in May of 2013. With the encouragement from a couple friends that already belonged to CFY, I took the plunge that has forever changed my life. I made a commitment to me, and to my overall well-being. I am a busy wife and mother of two daughters. It hasn’t been easy putting me first, but I knew I needed to do this.
I was in a really bad place before CF. I was overweight; I didn’t exercise regularly; I ate a horrible diet and worked a job that was very stressful. People search to find what exercise programs work for them and their busy schedules. Not only did I find a great program that benefited my schedule in CFY, but I found my workout passion. It has changed my life mentally and physically. I am leaner, stronger, and happier than I have ever been before. I am doing things I never thought possible. I have also learned a lot about nutrition and how to fuel my body properly. I have lost almost 20 pounds and have dropped 3 pant sizes. I still have a ways to go, but for the first time, I feel like I am on the right track. My 15 year old daughter has recently started at CFY, and I am so excited to share this experience with her.
I can’t express my gratitude to the coaches at CFY. They are there to make sure you have proper technique and form. They encourage you every step of the way. They have pushed me beyond what I thought were my physical and mental limits. They challenge me every time I walk into the box. The trainers genuinely care about everyone that walks through the door. I love the comradery and competitive environment. It’s so encouraging to work out at a gym that pushes people to be stronger than they think possible. Whether you’ve been an athlete your whole life or have never picked up a set of weights, they will help you with whatever goals you have in mind. There has been many times where I struggled to finish. Sometimes I needed an alternate or modified exercise, and often times I finished last. No matter where I am on my fitness journey, there is always someone there to cheer me on and encourage me through to the end.
Throughout high school I never really committed to one sport or a certain work out schedule. I was never dedicated to my fitness until January of my junior year, when I decided to join the Air Force and try my hand at a special operations position in their Pararecue program. I was dedicated and motivated to ready my body and mind for the following journey that would put me in a day to day ass kicking for weeks. My problem, I had no idea where to begin preparation for my future trials. I had the basics down; swimming, pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups and the occasional run. Knowing this wasn’t enough, my Dad asked me to attend a Saturday class at Crossfit of Yuma, where he had started a couple of weeks prier. Thinking it would be interesting to try, I attended one Saturday class with the family. I quickly discovered that Crossfit’s high intensity workouts not only got me winded fast, but the following morning, I felt a soreness like no other, which prevented me from moving from a stationary position in my bed, or sitting on the couch.
A couple classes later, I was hooked, as my personal records climbed, so did my confidence in my own physical abilities. One of the requirements for entering the Pararescue program, and to have a chance at getting a contract, was to pass a Physical Ability Stamina Test (PAST), which is a series of exercises that starts with a 500 meter swim, followed by a 1.5 mile run, then pull ups, sit ups, and push ups. After my first attempt at the test I barely passed by the skin of my teeth, but along with dedication, perseverance and most importantly, Crossfit Yuma, I finished my last PAST with not only a passing score but with iron man numbers. Now I feel like I have a fighting chance at my dream job, and I owe a special thanks to all the trainers at Crossfit Yuma for their help in getting me prepared.
The coaches and athletes of CrossFit Yuma have inspired me and kept me motivated during my journey and there is still more great things to come!
Throughout my career in the Navy I have seen and tried many different diets and workout schemes, falling off all of them for one reason or another. Then, when my family moved here in 2012, my daughter Katelynn and I decided to give Crossfit a try. We participated in our first WOD,Fran, and were hooked from that day. CrossFit Yuma has changed my life and my body!!!
Oh CrossFit. Where do I start? I found CrossFit when I needed something big to come in and save me from myself. I was petrified of all the CrossFit horror stories like missed box jumps and ripped hands (both have happened to me, but it’s a small price to pay), but I decided to give it a try anyway, and made myself commit to nine months. If I hated it, good riddance!
I suppose the beginning is a good place to start. I was born in a…. Ha. Kidding. I used to be really active. I taught yoga and was a massage therapist, but all that ended quickly when a back injury stopped me in my tracks, leading me to Barrows hospital and a L5/S1 fusion. I recovered swiftly, but started round after round of IVF (9 rounds total) to try and get our dream child. Depression and hormones are a bad mix, and I reached 220 lbs.
After Farrah joined us, I went to the gym five days a week, where I’d jump on the elliptical while listening to bad techno music, getting frustrated that weight wasn’t falling off with bicep curls. I finally followed my girlfriends to CrossFit Yuma, and my life changed.
I have about as much coordination as a giraffe on roller skates, but I became closer to an athlete than I ever have been in 40 years. With the help of my coaches and hard work, 40 lbs melted off, I’ve grown stronger physically and mentally, and I’ve acquired a whole new family. I couldn’t be happier, and I can’t wait to see how much more I can accomplish.
Thanks CrossFit Yuma!
I’ve never had much of a problem expressing myself, however, I find it very hard to convey how much it means to me to be a member of CFY. My wife and I joined CFY right after we got home from a vacation in Hawaii, after looking at some of the beach photos and seeing how out of shape I was, it really had me take a long hard look at my overall health and fitness. I have always enjoyed “working out”, mostly lifting and playing sports and other types of things that are considered work outs by 98% of anyone you speak to. I had heard about CrossFit from a friend and I tried doing some of the WODs off of the website crossfit.com on my own but without proper guidance andinstruction I found it to be fun and different but not beneficial in making solid gains in strength or endurance. Since joining CFY I’ve lost twenty pounds of fat, gotten stronger, faster, and am eating much healthier and feel great. At 32 years old I can honestly say that I am in the best shapeof my life.
After my college football days, I never had a burning desire to make it to the gym or ever felt guilty for not going, I had a very melancholy demeanor about working out. I would join different gyms here and there to check them out to and to see if I could get reinvigorated and energized to have kick ass workouts and pumps like I did while working out with my football team. It would always end the same way I’d go for about a month and then get bored and move on to another gym or stop working out all together. CFY really creates an atmosphere that promotes individual and group camaraderie that I enjoyed while in college. The spirit of competition and the strive for perfection runs rampant with all of the members both novice and elite. That spirit is infectious and spreads quickly which enables everyone to push the other members to “do your best”, “use good form”, and it’s not uncommon to hear people cheering you on to sounds of “you got this!”.
The CFY coaches and members really make you feel as if you are a part of a family when you’re there. In fact, I’ve never been to a gym where everyone knows everyone’s name and children’s names. My wife and I enjoy coming to class everyday and we especially enjoy the company of our new found friends from the gym. We also noticed that there are a lot of couples at the gym, like my wife and I, who share the same enthusiasm about Crossfit, CFY, and their health and lifestyle. My wife and I often find ourselves talking about Crossfit with friends and family numerous times throughout the day… everyday.
If you are reading this testimonial to get a feel to see what you may be signing up for, or are on the cusp of joining CFY. Try it! You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. There are no mirrors, and therearen’t people watching you or judging you (except for maybe improper form or technique on OLY lifts, but that is for good reasons, primarily your safety). I guarantee you that there is no other place in Yuma that you’ll enjoy more or have a better experience while kicking you own butt and taking your mind and body to its limits than at CFY.
I have always been overweight. I have tried many fad diets, exercise programs, and numerous weight loss pills during my adult life. Prior to pharmacy school, I had lost 40 pounds with a mail-order food program. Of course boredom set in, I started pharmacy school, and by the time graduation rolled around, I had gained 30 of those 40 pounds back. By the time I found a job, nearly 6 months later, the last 10 pounds had magically reappeared as well. Once I settled into my new job and community, I decided it was finally time to do something for myself and try to at least get back to where I was before school. I had tried gym memberships in the past, but would always lose interest after the first month or so. I never really saw any results and I was always bored going to the gym. The same thing happened with running, I lost 10 pounds through changing my eating habits and starting a C25K program, but I didn’t feel any different, I had to drag myself out the door for my run and got bored along the way.
I ran across CrossFit while reading an online profile, and looked it up. I thought it sounded interesting, but didn’t think my new little town would have access. To my surprise, I found several options, and decided to try CrossFit Yuma. After just one class I was hooked. I may have been the slowest runner and my partner for the WOD carried the weight (literally, each round of running included a medicine ball carry, and I didn’t carry it once, thankfully), but I made it through that workout and felt like I had accomplished something. Not only did I feel good about myself, everyone around me was telling me good job too. I had never felt support from fellow gym members in the past, rather I always felt like they were looking down on me, as I certainly didn’t look like them. But, at CrossFit Yuma, I have never felt like I wasn’t good enough or athletic enough to be there. The support I receive from my fellow CrossFitters is absolutely amazing. I’m still the last runner to come in from a warm up run, and generally the last one to finish a WOD, but I always have people around cheering/coaching/pushing me to the finish. Many times, I will find myself heading out for the last run of a WOD, and someone who has already finished will catch up with me and run along side me, helping me to keep pace.
I have been at CFY for about six months. I have lost over 30 pounds and dropped 2 pant sizes, but more importantly, I have gained confidence in myself. I enjoy the camaraderie of my fellow members and I enjoy working out. Oh, don’t get me wrong, there are things about CrossFit I don’t really like (namely Burpees and the Inchworm), but even though I may complain, I’m thankful for the opportunity to be at each and every class. I am amazed at the progress I have made, I can now do band assisted pull-ups (I started out doing ring rows)! I have a long way to go before I reach my goals, but thanks to CFY and all of the awesome coaches, I am well on my way!
When my friend first mentioned CrossFit Yuma, my initial thought was CrossFit is not for me. I thought CrossFit was only for athletic, competitive, and fit people. I could not have been more wrong. Since my first day at CFY, I immediately felt welcomed by everyone and I have never once felt intimidated. Coaches Mike and Joey took the time to show me every single exercise and pushed me to reach new goals.
Since I started CrossFit Yuma a year ago, I have lost 25 pounds and I have seen my body change every day since then. I know this could not have been possible without the coaches pushing me to reach new limits, along with everyone else there cheering me on. Everyone at CFY inspires and motivates me to keep moving forward. I found motivation at CFY I had NEVER had before. I now aspire to be healthy and stay fit. Working 4 to 5 days a week 10hrs a day and having two kids can be hard to find time to work out but it’s not impossible. I have realized that one size doesn’t fit us all. I have developed goals for myself and am confident that I will reach them with the help of the CFY staff. It is so rewarding when people compliment me about my weight loss. I know my hard work and dedication are paying off.
Thank You CrossFit Yuma…
Life changing! It’s that simple. CrossFit Yuma changed my life. Not only has it changed and trimmed my body, it has made me mentally stronger! At 35 years old I found my self at my heaviest weight and the worst shape of my life with little energy. I grew up being tall and skinny, never fit. I didn’t play any sports nor participated in any kind of physical activities. After having two kids I gained weight. I joined gyms, went walking/running at the parks, bought every single video and DVD shown on infomercials. Nothing stuck, I didn’t enjoy them and didn’t continue exercising. My brother had been going to CrossFit for a couple of years and had told me about it. I saw pictures and videos and immediately became scared and intimidated of CrossFit, I didn’t believe I had what it took. When my 63 year old dad joined CrossFit Yuma I knew that I had no more damn excuses! Thanks Louie and Tata!!! I was very scared and hesitant but decided to join not knowing that it was going to change me in so many ways 🙂 After my first foundations class I cried to Joey (coach and owner). I felt frustrated, sad, mad… I couldn’t believe that I had let myself get to this point. Joey reassured me and said come back tomorrow, and I did. I decided that the squats, cleans, snatches, pull-ups, wall balls, dead lifts, burpees (the list goes on) would not defeat me, that I would beat them and overcome my feelings of inadequacy. One year later, 20 pounds lighter and stronger than I’ve ever been!! To be able to say that feels amazing! At 36 years old I am in the best shape of my life, I never thought that was possible. I will continue to get stronger and fitter everyday!! My husband and family have been by my side through this journey, encouraging me and helping me believe in myself! Thanks guys! This has been the hardest thing that I have ever done, both physically and mentally. But I love it! I love my coaches, words cannot describe how GREAT they truly are! They push me, they encourage me, but most importantly……. they believe in me 🙂 I love all of the wonderful friendships that I have made, everyone encourages you and helps you through the WODs. Nobody looks down on you or judges you because you are weaker or slower, it’s the complete opposite. The commodore is wonderful!! Thank you Joey, Mike, Jenn and all of the CrossFit Yuma family 🙂
My journey with CrossFit Yuma has been amazing and quite a long ride. I left my dream city to come back home and work extra hard to pursue everything I set my mind to. I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy battle and it was going to take a lot of time and patience, but I have pulled through with ups and lots of downs. I visualized myself, that if I worked hard enough everyday to be better, it would bring me closer to my goals and dreams. I have found so much support in what I call home Crossfit Yuma since day one, that’s why I’m still there. I’ve faced so many challenges along the way but have never given up. This year I decided I wanted a bigger change in my life and I knew it would mean sacrificing a lot, even losing friends, parties and more! I knew that if I committed to a better lifestyle I would inspire myself more and others around me. So with the help of my coaches I have done work and I have seen change physically, mentally and emotionally. My life has changed for the better. If you work, you get results. PERIOD! It’s a hard journey but not impossible, it’s an on going inner battle! I thank everyone who is part of my journey and continues to be there! When you set your mind to change, change occurs.
This year I received an invitation to give my first speech at the Women’s Expo, it was super emotional for me and that’s when it clicked: This is why you’ve been through what you have been through Vianne, to motivate those who need motivation. It was a magical experience!
Thank you Crossfit Yuma!
